VCU Art Museum

Architect Steven Holl was tasked with designing the Virginia university’s new contemporary art museum. In the same vein to his previous body of work, the new museum consists of a composition of bold forms and a full spectrum of transparencies and opacities. We provided shop drawings and detail engineering to coalesce the complex 3D geometry with the reality of panelized materials. The double-curved surface is imitated in purely flat metal tiles that we worked to coordinate to the building’s steel skeleton. The sides are clad in a milky white laminated glass that blend to the entire Gesamtkunstwerk during the day but glow like lanterns at night.
