Compartment Earth

A permanent sculpture by Roxy Paine, it represents an Earth composed of multiple, varying scaled boxes. The stainless steel modular pieces are waterjet cut into shapes, prefabricated in-shop, and shipped as a single unit. To make it look like it’s floating, we floor mounted it at a single point to a plate sunken and concealed into the floor. Conceptually, everything cantilevers off this point. LED provided finite element analysis for the sculpture, including optimizing material thickness, developing the connection detail to the superstructure, welding procedures, install sequence, and transportation to site.
